Mountain Cheese and Wine opened its doors for the first
time on July 4, 1974 at the Stowe Center Complex on the
Mountain Road. We saw a need for a specialty food shop
in Stowe and began to recognize the strides forward that
were being made in the world of wine. We also wanted
to operate a business in which we both could be involved.
Stowe is a great town for many reasons, however what
attracted us most was the sense of community. The
people had an "all for one" attitude that was very
appealing. We decided that this was the place to raise
our children and build our business while enjoying a country
lifestyle. One of
our favorite stories from the Stowe Center days is the
runaway wheel of Swiss Emmentaler.
If you look at the picture, you can see how big the wheel of
cheese was. It's the wheel located under the counter
near the customers. The truck driver who delivered our
cheese at the time was loading this 230 pound wheel of
emmentaler in a box onto a dolly. As he wheeled to the
edge of the truck's bay, the dolly collapsed. The
emmentaler fell to the ground , broke out of the box and
started rolling. It rolled right down the stairs that
ran through the middle of the building. We jumped out
of the way so as not to get crushed and helplessly watched
as the runaway Swiss gained momentum while headed straight
for the pool! Luckily this story has a happy ending
and the wheel miraculously fell just before plunging into
the deep end. Disaster averted!
In 1978 we moved to the
Red Barn shops where we doubled our space and were able to
increase our selection of goods in all areas. These
days we are still at the Red Barn shops but have doubled our
space once again in our current location. We believe
our variety of products, knowledge and friendly personal
service are the things that make us special. Thanks
for visiting our website and hopefully we'll see you in
Stowe!
